Human Nature, Sociology and the Color of Sex Blogs
I like to think of myself as artistic, if not autistic, and I spent a lot of time picking the colors I used for this site. I arrived at this decision in part by stealing ideas from templates I liked and in part from choosing colors that resonated with me due to my disposition and the topic at hand.
I certainly can't speak for all cultures in all places and times, but I have noticed increasingly that bloggers writing on emotionally charged issues and on sexuality make some similar decisions. In the small sphere of English-speaking web journals and blogs on sexuality that I have been exposed to, I notice a lot of black. Further, I see a lot of red.
Somehow, when it all boils down, it seems like there is no faster way to communicate "This is not a mainstream, Web 2.0 site" than using the colors red and black.
I see this especially in the sites that delve seriously into alternative lifestyles, such as BDSM and fetish sites, and the current crossover into the increasingly dilute Goth scene.
I'm not saying that we're copying one-another, and there are certainly noticeable exceptions like Erosblog. Eros' choice of yellow rather suits his light-hearted presentation of things sexual.
Nor am I saying that there's a thing wrong with using any color for any reason. I have just become self-conscious of late. I like to think that I *chose* my colors, that I copied no one. But I don't know any more.
I just wonder if there isn't something to this whole human-nature thing, after all.

By the way, I'm not changing the color-scheme here. I *like* this. A lot.
You know, the preponderance of black and red was one of the main reasons I chose blue for my site. I love red especially; I decorate with it, I wear it, I even just bought some deliciously red rope. But many others had it and black, and it didn't really fit with where I wanted to go with the blog anyway. So it was my favorite color, blue.
I think the important part of color schemes anyway is if the owner likes it. Besides, yours fits you and the persona you've chosen to cultivate :)
I agree with you that the important thing for the color scheme is that you feel it represents you and your message.
I'm glad to know I wasn't the only one who noticed this.
...whoa, I must had dissapointed SO many people when my template was red/black/gray.
They came in looking for sex and I handed them a neurosis.
...I feel I should apologise...
nah.
Hello! Neurosis?
I thought I was addicted to porn for a year...
Hmmm... I like white and earth tones myself. Greens, Taupe, Yellows - With lots of other colors used as accents. Tho, all my kanji are woodgrain. I tend to stay away from blacks and reds as primary colors.

Nina,
I knew I was going to get in trouble making generalizations... My statements were in reaction to colors used on sites linked to from Cunning Linguists, my own included, as well as years and years of surfing porn.
Lots of folks don't use red, black or grey at all.
Well, I used black for a very long time. Then I went to grey and gold, but that seemed kinda...I don't know, sedate?
I then switched to a kind of greyish purple, but you're the only one that likes it :-(
Hugs,
rg
I do like the purple. Go, see! Everyone!
But designs evolve... it only matters if you like it, really.
