Remember the 20+ year old quote about TV being that 'vast wasteland?' Things seem to have moved beyond that now.

Your terse, direct comment was terrific; it also made me laugh. A few years back, I'd gone 15 years without owning a TV. Naturally, 'normal' people dubbed me crazy. I have one now just to watch DVDs and tapes, but I thought long and hard before laying out that cash for nothing more than a baby pacifier.

Like you, I won't watch 'that' either. But then, I rarely watch anything unless I'm sick or tired. Simply sprawling on the sofa and flicking the on switch is guaranteed to get me a deep nap. Apparently, I can sleep through any programming.

Kaz,

I will admit to watching plenty of TV, and plenty of bad TV at that. I also admit to paying plenty for High-Definition cable programming... So I will not pretend that I am above it or above anyone--especially since I have also admitted to watching plenty of so-called reality television here.

Be that as it may, I'm drawing a line in the sand. I can't bear the thought that people are being paid (you know they are) to go through treatment in front of TV cameras.

The issue for me is motivation. These people, allegedly celebrities, allegedly needing treatment, are using this as a vehicle to a comeback? Thought they would go through hell so might as well be paid for it? Thought "I need to be in treatment but I'm not going to go unless it makes me more famous?"

I'm just really torn up about this.

On one level, I think it's important for people to understand what addiction really is and what it is not. That part seems like a win for everyone.

What does not seem good at all to me is the fact that it will be edited for sound bites and for ratings. That producers thought about what might make a good show and selected a group of people who would add the appropriate appeal and drama--you know, a compelling viewing experience.

For this subject matter, I would be more inclined to view a documentary rather than a commercial program with product placement.

So... Yeah... I'm just not watching it.
