Wow, Man

Watching VH1 tonight. They are showing a documentary series about Sex. Well, It's called "Sex: The Revolution."

Anyway, it's making me realize how fortunate I am to live in a time where I can write about sexuality and BDSM without fear of police action or obscenity charges. It really hasn't been that long since the idealists made it "OK."

So I'm thinking that I'm lucky to live in a time where society has been cracked open at least this much. And I'm thinking that it's really important to me that these rights are cherished and defended.

I have watched that and you are right. Although, in watching the history of sex on history channel I realized that, our ancestors were into kink, they just didn't call it that. And what with persecution post renaissance, who can blame them?
I will say a heartfelt THANK YOU!!! to Kinsey for waking society up a bit. Without his research, I have no doubt that a lot of people would be very miserable. And THREE CHEERS to our military boys and girls for keeping our rights safe and sound. :) Blessed be!

pnthrkitty,

That was an interesting point you made about kink, which makes me think a great deal about labels and how they can be empowering or destructive. For example, identifying ourselves as kinky at once unites us, yet separates us from those who do not identify the same way.

And yes, I am very grateful to the researches and to the many people who questioned answers tat has allowed me to have some of the most profound experiences of my life. On the same token, I do not feel the war is won--butr I guess I already said that in the post...

Three cheers to all of our defenders. May we all defend in our way.

If you see painting and sculpture from the ancient world, you'll see that what we call "kink" was pretty normal to them. That we consider it "kink" and define it as outside the bounds of "normal" is a more recent invention than the kinks themselves. Virtually nothing (short of electricity play, for obvious reasons) is new under the sun. What is celebrated swings on a pendulum from total puritanical to total promiscuous, but none of it is -new-.

And respect for pnthrkitty's comment - three cheers for whomever is fighting (our military, some lawyers, some nonprofits) to keep our rights for us.

Bad Man,

I have to say I agree with you. Over and over again I find that the writers of history appeal to the sensibilities of their contemporaries or their patrons. Few challenge us.

Yes, I too have a deep love and respect for those who, by vocation, defend us. But it's not up to them alone. We live in a participatory democracy--at least in name.

The real revolution for me is when people are honest, to a fault, and refuse to back away from their positions.

What? The bravery to talk the talk? The integrity to walk the walk?

Yes. Completely agreed.
