Do You Remember Audblog?

Devi's voice surprised me on the way to job two tonight.

I had downloaded several files of her singing acapella, years ago. I saved them in my iTunes library. Today one came up in random rotation.

Brought a big smile to my face.

"I Just Dropped In…"

"To see what condition my condition was in."

Can you believe that is a Kenny Rogers song?

It's been on my mind a bunch. I keep catching reruns of The Big Lebowski on cable.

It may be my favorite movie, evar.

My favorite edited (TV Friendly) line?

What I Wish They Had Figured Out 30 Years Ago

To paraphrase an article that appeared in The Telegraph, a British paper, some "gifted" teens find listening to Heavy Metal music to be comforting.

Hallelujah and amen, Brother!

Just this morning on the long walk into work from parking I was listening to Metallica singing "Don't Tread on Me." Metal isn't any more my preference, not since Industrial and Techno (*so* 1990s), but I spent a lot of time in my youth listening to Dokken, Krokus, Ratt, and Motley Crüe. I never lived anything close to a Heavy Metal lifestyle, being a good little boy going to church and being obsequious to my elders as I was habitually. But the noisy stuff took me to a place I liked to be. And it works for me still.

The thesis of the article is that bright kids are drawn to it, that not all geeks like chess, D&D and classical music. And that Metal, in and of itself, is not an indicator of delinquency. Duh.

Around the time I was in sixth grade, I had been given a number of intelligence tests because of some high scores on standardized tests. I was placed in some programs for gifted kids, taking me out of my regular classroom.

I think that the folks running these programs meant well. Really. Attempting to offer me more challenge for my apparently very-healthy brain. But I think there is a problem with these programs. I think I should have been given the opportunity to prove to myself that I was gifted first. Frankly, I never "felt" gifted. I should have earned and asked for the privilege instead of being labeled and slapped in a program.

Why?

Because I feel like I never lived up to whatever Nobel Peace Prize potential I was supposed to have. Between that and my ADD symptoms manifesting themselves, my academic performance was never really as good after that. I was already "smart," so why should I try? I got passing grades without much study and that was good enough. More time for reading science fiction and listening to music. Anyway, for a while I was golden. I learned way too late that my brain, like anything else, needs a workout. And practice.

One of my brothers had an opposite issue. He was dyslexic so he got stuck with other "slow-learners" and got a different label. Meanwhile, he has shown himself to be a smart, patient man with amazing artistic and mechanical ability. He had something to prove.

Both of us were given labels. Didn't mine seem like the better one to have? Do my insecurities seem trivial? Whatever. I have my cross. You have yours. I'm not trying to be a victim here, but I am recognizing cause-and-effect in my life. I need this so I can move past it, you know?

I have a lot of thoughts about what I will do differently when I have my own children. At least one of them is that I'm going to try damned hard not to use words like "potential." Either it's a false limit or it's something you feel you'll never achieve. Either way, I think it's harmful.

I have contempt for a lot of labels. Sometimes I'm just contrarian.

But I love music. And I don't care what it means.

It's Not About the Band

I'm so not into this show.

This guy has a huge following. He's a sweet man. He's a handsome devil. He loves his audience. He writes clever lyrics. But I had more fun watching the opening band.

Even the cute tatted girls in the front row were no fun to watch. They were just singing along and throwing the occasional devil horns. Yay!

This is why I am quiet a lot. Because I'm bitter and angry. I don't feel a part at all of what's happening. It all started when he started skipping lines and letting the audience sing. Um, Ok… I definitely didn't pay to hear them. He let the audience sing an entire song at one point. Well shame on me I guess for not pre-familiarizing myself with his oeuvre prior to my arriving this evening.

OK. Thanks for listening. I had to get that out. And for those of you who had a really wild time at the show… well, my hat's off. I don't get it.

RDA of Subversion

I love taking my filthy, degenerate music with me.

When I'm listening to my iPod with a grin or a smirk or a full-on smile, it's because I'm hearing Karen Finley shout "Get me off! Get me off! Get me off right now!" or the female vocalist from Lords of Acid saying "I wanna sit on your face." Or Prince. Jesus, there's Cream, Peach, Erotic City, Tick Tick Bang, Gett Off… Trent Reznor singing "I want to fuck you like an animal!"

Or Front 242's sample of the preacher shouting "Hey poor, you don't have to be poor any more!" Yello's song Domingo which is a long rant against Christianity. Moev's songs Captitol Heaven and Crucify Me. Thrill Kill Kult's Shock of Point 6 with the "Bow down and worship me" refrain. Or their song Kooler than Jesus…

I cherish songs that have lyrics which might incite riots or cause arrests for obscenity or indecency. Well, at least for causes I identify with: sexuality and sexual freedom, intellectual freedom, and religious freedom.

Which reminds me of Rush's song Witch Hunt! Ooh!

But, I gotta say, those songs get me off on so many levels.

What songs get you off?

Ineffective Audio Exorcism

Dammit. As soon as I got in the shower this morning I found I could remember even more of the song that I was trying to block out.

What's worse is that I forgot to bring my iPod with me today.

So for about the last two hours I have been treating myself to the dulcet vocals of Steve Perry.

I can't make it stop.

Such is the power of the Ear Worm.

I Just Wanted to Thank Eden

I spent the second half of my bus ride listening to a playlist that started out as my Black + Red mix tape about 14 years ago featuring Front 242, Moev, Madonna reading from the Bible over beats, Lords of Acid and Recoil.

The Recoil track "Want" is a recent addition to the playlist. But it fits in perfectly to the mix and makes a brilliant segue to Karen Finley's Tales of Taboo.

But I wanted to thank Eden for writing about that track years ago, or I might never have heard it.

After listening to that dark, sexual and subversive music I feel full of black glee.

Journey can fuck right off.

"…Saints or sinners

What's left
After you fall?

Sorry… It all seems to come back to the Journey lyrics for me, doesn't it?

That song has been in my head for a few days… I'm about to put on my iPod headphones to see if I can't change that.

Track of the Morning

Sometimes I'm a little emotional… When I listened to my iPod on the way to work this morning, Firewater by BT caused some tears to well up. There aren't any lyrics per se, I just got caught up in it. Low, low bass line, emphatic drum track, a little trippy synth, lush production, and soaring vocals.

Music is so beautiful!

Pharaohs

The song of the moment is "Pharaohs," by Tears for Fears. It's a slowed down, deconstructed version of "Everybody Wants to Rule the World." Maybe less of a song than a track… It's an uncharacteristically ambient or chilled sound for them. It was originally released around 1984, but the gentle melancholy/gentle lilt fits my mood of late.

I had a copy on vinyl, then later it was released on CD on a compilation that is wonderfully titled "Saturnine Martial & Lunatic." If you were ever a huge fan of them, I would recommend this collection of material that wasn't released on any previous album.

I'm 37. I know the 80s were a long time ago… But in my head I still feel like I'm 17.

Song of the Moment

I'm not ordinarily a morning person…

But this morning I was grooving loudly to "Jenny," a track by Armand Van Helden—on the album "Nympho."

Just has a really good thump—almost a staccato bass drum. Was making my rear-view mirror jump.

And it's sexy.

If you do the dance/electronica thing, I highly recommend it.

It's going to go on my "Kink" playlist.

Trip Like I Do

Have you heard the Filter/Crystal Method version of this song? It rawks awfully hard!

I rank it on roughly the same level of aural crack as "Reload" by Rob Zombie. Not as fast, but just as hard.

Apparently I'm way behind the curve on this one. It's from the 1997 Spawn Soundtrack. I knew the original Crystal Method track was older, but I had never heard that version of it before. I think it's interesting that the clip on Amazon lists only Filter as the artist. That's so wrong.

It's the Return of 1982

I'm listening to Kylie Minogue's new album 'cause... yeah. You already know.

Anyway, I'm sure it'll be a brief trend, but the music is so early-eighties-new-wave/eighties pop/late-eighties-underground-dance that it's not even funny. Shades of Lipps Inc, Yaz, Janet Jackson Rhythm Nation, The Jets, Stakker...

But she also kicks it urban style.

It's just pop music. And that's just fine.

Music

Music is very evocative to me. A song will bring back to me many memories of things happening in my life when I first became aware of it. Times. Places. People. Fragrances.

"My Kinda Lover"

McDonald's. The little girl slipped away from her group of friends to a table nearer to mine. Pretended to be looking at the contest game board in her hands. Asked me if I had just seen whatever movie was playing in that town. I shook my head "No," then glanced at my parents who were sitting across the aisle. I didn't know what their reaction would be and frankly I didn't want to deal with anything remotely embarrassing.

She looked at me and followed my glance to my parents.

Her eyes got big and she darted back over to her friends.

My mother so much as assumed I had no idea what had been happening.

To the contrary, I was very aware. Not that I would necessarily have known much about what to do—at that time in my life. And offended she would think I was oblivious. In fact, I lived for that sort of attention.

...

Or the week away at that church camp. Yeah, well, as usual I found someone to fixate on romantically. I always did. In fact I managed to get two friends fighting for my attention.

I wrote to one of them a few times. But it really pissed off my mother. I was 13 and she was 15. Clearly that girl would want nothing but to corrupt her baby boy.

But I wanted to be corrupted. That was the whole God-damned point.

Sadly that would have to wait.

She lived about an hour away, and at that time in my life it might just as well have been another continent.

The Best Christmas Song, Ever

Santa Claus Is Back In Town

Well, it’s Christmas time pretty baby
And the snow is falling on the ground
Well, it’s Christmas time pretty baby
And the snow is falling down
Well you be a real good little girl
Santa Claus is back in town

Got no sleigh with reindeer
No sack on my back
You’re gonna see me comin’ in a big black Cadillac
Oh, it’s Christmas time pretty baby
And the snow is falling on the ground
Well you be a real good little baby
Santa Claus is back in town

Hang up your pretty stockings
And turn off the light
Santa Claus is comin’ down your chimney tonight
Oh, it’s Christmas time pretty baby
And the snow is falling on the ground
Well you be a real good little baby
Santa Claus is back in town

Got me so blind I can't see
That she's a black magic woman
She's tryin' to make a devil out of me.

New Position:

U got 2 try a new position, yeah
Somethin' that'll make it all right
Oh, a new position, yeah, yeah
Let's go fishin' in the river, the river of life

The Clouds Prepare for Battle

In the dark and brooding silence.
Bruised and sullen storm clouds
Have the light of day obscured.
Looming low and ominous
In twilight premature
Thunderheads are rumbling
In a distant overture...

Rush. Jacob's Ladder.

Repetition

It can get get tedious, but at its best Drum 'n Bass is very compelling.

Listening to Keltech. I think I got the file from epitonic.com or emusic.com...

Bass is sexier when you can feel it.

It All Comes Back to Sex

It all comes back to sex.

May I also recommend Darking Nikki, by The Artist Formerly Denoted With an Unpronouncable Symbol:

I knew a girl named Nikki
I guess u could say she was a sex fiend
I met her in a hotel lobby
Masturbating with a magazine
She said how'd u like 2 waste some time
And I could not resist when I saw little Nikki grind
She took me 2 her castle
And I just couldn't believe my eyes
She had so many devices
Everything that money could buy
She said sign your name on the dotted line
The lights went out
And Nikki started 2 grind

Nikki

The castle started spinning
Or maybe it was my brain
I can't tell u what she did 2 me
But my body will never be the same
Her lovin' will kick your behind
Oh, she'll show u no mercy
But she'll sho'nuff sho'nuff show u how 2 grind

Darlin' Nikki

Woke up the next morning
Nikki wasn't there
I looked all over and all I found
Was a phone number on the stairs
It said thank u 4 a funky time
Call me up whenever u want 2 grind

Oh, Nikki, ohhhh

come back Nikki, come back
Your dirty little Prince
wanna grind grind grind grind grind grind grind grind grind

"Hello, how r u? I'm fine. 'cause I know
that the Lord is coming soon, coming, coming soon."

Berlin

"Sex, I'm a..."

Feel the fire, feel my love inside you it's so right
There's the sound and the smell of love in my mind
I'm a toy, come and play with me, say the word now
Wrap your legs around mine and ride me tonight

I'm a man - I'm a goddess
I'm a man - Well I'm a virgin
I'm a man - I'm a blue movie
I'm a man - I'm a bitch
I'm a man - I'm a geisha
I'm a man - I'm a little girl
And we make love together

Slip and slide in your wet delight, feel the blood flow
Not too fast, don't be slow, my love's in your hands

I'm a man - I'm a boy
I'm a man - Well I'm your mother
I'm a man - I'm a one night stand
I'm a man - Am I bi
I'm a man - I'm a slave
I'm a man - I'm a little girl
And we make love together

Skin to skin, tongue to oooh, come on honey hold tight
Come inside, it's a passion play just for you
Let's get lost in that magic place, all alone now
Drink your fill from my fountain of love, wet your lips

I'm a man - I'm a teaser
I'm a man - Well I'm a virgin
I'm a man - I'm a one night stand
I'm a man - I'm a drug
I'm a man - Well I'm your slave
I'm a man - I'm a dream divine
And we make love together
I'm a man - I'm a goddess
I'm a man - I'm a hooker
I'm a man - I'm a blue movie
I'm a man - I'm a slut
I'm a man - I'm a geisha
I'm a man - I'm your babe
I'm a man - I'm a dream divine
And we make love together
And we'll make love forever

Now Flock of Seagulls are up in the rotation.

They don't make music like that anymore. Shame.

On the Radio

Last night on the drive home, I eschewed my usual beat-driven music for the local bad-boy rock station.

Sometimes theres an itch that can only be scratched one way.

Alice in Chains.

White Zombie.

You know.
