BV emailed out of the blue, today...
She sent a link to the video for a song called "Pray for Me," by SIXX:A.M. Yes, that Sixx! Apparently, he has been to hell and back...
The video is shot in black-and-white, and parts are NSFW. My favorite part is at the end, the last three or four shots. If you watch the video a second time, it puts the first sequence into a whole different light. It's deliciously evil.
I liked the lyrics, too. Dark is good.

FetLife, for the Kinky
I just learned about FetLife today—I was tipped off by Venus. I liked what I saw and created a profile there. Friend me if you like, by all means.
It's a new network site, but the premise is adults, kink and fetish. It has a clean design and is still in development, but looks to me to be very promising.
Its simplicity is refreshing, It's not garish like MySpace or about how cool you are like FaceBook or all-business like LinkedIn. I have RL profiles on all of those and on Friendster, but those profiles are all Safe-For-Work.
I'm glad there are more places for adults. Tribe had such promise until they panicked about having kids on board. It's good and right to protect our children. But adults need and deserve a place where they can let loose, too.

Community, and Frank Talk (And Talk About Sex)
Combine elements of video blogging and a video-sharing site, add an emphasis on discussion and feedback, then stir it up. Or, combine voyeurism into vulnerabilities or personality differences and the thought that you could be the Dear Abbey that helps someone out of a real bind. Or, it's like a call-in advice show, except you're the expert.
BlabberMash is like that.
This site is intriguing and compelling. I spent a while clicking around the current submissions and found funny and sad and OMG.
I mention BlabberMash here because it speaks to my ideals of open communication, in particular about sexuality.

More on Gender
I found another article on gender and culture that goes a long way to thoughtfully explaining why things are as they are. It's inflammatory in a gentle way, by which I mean it may challenge your thinking or your indoctrination.
Seed has a link to a NY Times article which asks "Is There Anything Good About Men?" But the real meat is in the actual transcript of a presentation by Roy F. Baumeister, who addressed the American Psychological Association.
What I appreciated most was that it did not justify any behavior, but went a long way toward explaining why things might appear certain ways.

Truer Words?
Psychology Today has another article I like quite a bit. It's called Ten Politically Incorrect Truths About Human Nature.
OK, they had me with the phrase "politically incorrect." I am not a politician. I don't see the need for it. Be that as it may, I also love to be challenged and to be presented with some well-reasoned arguments for why things are the way they are, even if it's not what I want to hear. Things that are counter-intuitive and/or counter-culture fill me with glee.
Asok, the character in the Dilbert comic strip, once said it best in reference to a joke: "It hurts because it's true."
But go. Read it. See if you agree about who really benefits from monogamy, or why humans are attracted to certain types. You will either get really angry, or you will think "Well, that finally explains it!"
I fall into the latter group.

Maybe Now I Get It
I don't have a lot of exposure to other folks in BDSM. A lot of that has to do with me, and that I don't socially put myself out there. Part of it is that in Minnesota, there don't seem to be a lot of events like there might be in more populous areas.
I do like Minneapolis and St. Paul a great deal. For cities of their size, there is a pretty active and sizable creative community, wonderful museums and theatre, and large gay and lesbian communities…
But sexually, we're pretty closeted up here. The majority of successful businesses that sell sexually oriented products often sell items for fantasy, novelty or entertainment. Like it's disposable. There's no commitment—there is no lifestyle.
There is one store that sells amazing dildos and floggers, but because I have a penis I feel a little outside of their target demographic.
And anyway, the only place I have seen anything like a scene in the Midwest, it was at a goth club that has special nights twice a week where a mistress and her assistant will spend a few minutes with people from the audience. She will flog them or drip wax or restrain them. Not for enough time to put them into sub-space. Nobody came on stage. I felt like it was just a tease. While there were clearly people who are very much in the lifestyle, I feel like the audience was comprised more of people who are voyeurs hoping to catch a glimpse of nude girls. Again, I could be wrong. As I said, socially I don't risk much.
Ah, yes, my point. I do have one.
Last night I came across a Web site about the BDSM lifestyle, one among many that I am finding now that I'm paying attention. In particular, I found an essay about Doms. I won't paraphrase or quote it here because of the author's concern over copyright, but the mental and emotional states the author described were states that I have experienced. He described thoughts and fears that I have. So finally, I do not feel like I must be some sort of insecure freak in the spectrum of male dominants. Whether or not this article describes all Doms is irrelevant to me. I do feel that now I understand why women who know Doms would describe me as one.
And finally, I can let go of wondering if the insecurity I experience means that I am not.
I needed to know that.
I feel like I can move on. And grow.

Following threads on my RSS reader lead me back to a manifesto written by a fellow named Hugh Macleod, to whom I have linked for many years. His shtick is "cartoons drawn on the back of business cards." And his site is gapingvoid.
The manifesto is called "How to Be Creative."
You could dismiss it as yet-another-creative-drones-on-about-how-it-should-be. You could. But if you feel something, and you're pretty sure you know what it is, then his thoughts are both validating and a kick in the ass.

Why We Do It, Why We Do It the Way that We Do
Audacia Ray wrote a pretty inspired analysis of sex blogging, as opposed to blogging in general.
She wrote it in response to an article by another writer who believes that blogging is waning since the advent of social services like MySpace.
Audacia, by contrast, suggests that sex blogging is what it is, already, and for several reasons believes that it will continue in its current form for some time to come.
What I like about the post was that it wasn't trying to make any sort of gendered analysis. It was more of a nuts-and-bolts list of reasons why "anonymous" blogging is appealing and why most people who blog in this format aren't suddenly turning into webcam operators or doing podcasts.
I chose this outlet for my expression because I saw it being done, very well, by others. There is certainly an illicit thrill to be had. I have blogged from my home, from Metro Transit buses, from hotel rooms and lobbies, from my mother's computer, from my Treo cell phone and my laptop and from most every place I have worked since 2002.
In a very anti-social way, it makes me feel connected to a community. This has always appealed to me.

While I am completely grateful for the linkage, I feel it is fair to say that I have never performed for cash—not that I wouldn't… While I occasionally write stories that are explicitly sexual, these have never appeared (to my knowledge) anywhere but my own blogs.
I do have an affiliate link to Amazon. I link to them when I am referring to a specific book, piece of music, or movie. This has yet to pay even a single dollar, as I would only receive a commision if you purchased the item immediately on viewing the page on Amazon. As no one does this ever (including myself), Amazon gets free advertising for their merchandise.
I've considered publishing myself via Café Press, but I believe my content would go against their terms of service so I haven't pursued that path further. Meanwhile, I have considered trying my hand at Café Press in other ways and have thought about some designs that might entertain and prove fruitful.
But the blogging itself is for lust, not money.

I bought the new issue of Juxtapoz. It's an art magazine, but they call the genre alternately "low brow" or "absurdist pop art." Whatever it is, I adore almost everything in it, front to back and back to front.
It is inclusive of graffiti, tattoos, comics and traditional paint and illustration. I find it all witty, playful, and brilliant in the best possible ways.

Coming Events

Near as I can tell, using AltaVista's translation tool and the dict.cc dictionary, I'm in the selection of sites representing the male voice, and my blog is described as about my sex addiction, my visits with my psychiatrist, and my masturbation to forget the world. While true… I wish my stories would have gotten a mention. I've written one or two. Other bloggers get more exciting mentions in terms of eroticism.

Archeology Is Sexy
Reading this article on iron age textiles was interesting to me. I do have a fascination with history and prehistory, as well as alternate views on the same. Especially when new things are discovered and the two intersect. So I would have read with interest, anyway.

Reminds me of some amazing passages in Norman Mailer's novel about Egypt called Ancient Evenings. There is lovemaking in it that rivals anything I have read anywhere. I Doubt I'm *That* Clever...
But I feel more clever, because :: w.bloggar :: is a less obvious way to post from work than it is to post from web a browser window. Hell, I even feel worried about emailing entries from Hotmail!
But this looks like it could be an email client or something. No nudie pics or Big Bold Words on screen to make you watch over your shoulder.
Oh... and it minimizes to the system tray in Windows. And it supports Typepad.
And you can set it up with profiles for different blogs. If you're into that. Some people I know have more than one. :: cough ::
And there's spellcheck!
